We have a new Purple belt...

Aaron Von Reuter is our newest purple belt at Progressive Jiu Jitsu. He joins an elite group of only a handful of students to achieve such a high ranking. Trevor and Ian are very proud of him and so is everyone else at our school. He has been working very hard to get his purple belt and he surely deserves it. Keep up the good work!

On another note...
Sub League photos and results will be posted soon. It was an amazing experience for everyone who competed and fun for all the spectators as well. We were so proud of everyone who competed.

Tournament Preparation

At Progressive our new year's resolution is this:
No more individuals competing at tournaments. No more showing up at a tournament one random weekend just to give it a shot. That is not how we want to represent our school.
So, it's time to utilize our blog. I am going to start digging up competitions around the area and post the info on here so that we can get a list of all the people who are competing and we can train right for them. Sound good?

The most upcoming tournament is the Sub League

Who's down?

Sub League is a Submission Wrestling tournament where the only way you can win is by Submission. Matches are 4 mins. You will likely to have 3-5 matches in a day.

The first Sub League competition of the year is happening: February 13, 2010

The event is happening at:

Liberty High School
21945 NW Wagon Way, Hillsboro, OR 97124 It doesn't say anything about cost of registration or a registration deadline. If anyone knows any more about it, post it here.

Go HERE to get to the main sub league page
Go HERE to see the divisions

Last year we didn't really compete in the sub leagues so who is in?

We want to see more photos like this:

No He didn't!

Last Thursday, January 20th, Alive MMA hosted caged fights at the Zoo night club right here in Vancouver, WA. The event had an extra little twist to it... an old school open grappling challenge.
More info HERE

The gauntlet was thrown down to anyone in the crowd:
Free drinks for the night to anyone who could tap out Judo Jon Krohn.
Who is Judo John? Weighing it at an estimated 250 lbs he is a beast of a Professional fighter,
IFL veteran, Judo National Champion '04, 2nd degreen Kodokan Judo black belt, BJJ purple belt, and senior instructor at alive MMA.
So as the night progressed, as you could imagine, very few people were willing to take on the challenge of tapping out Judo John.
Since no one had the balls to step up and at least try, our own Ian Vossler decided he'd give it a go.

The crowd was shocked! Judo John has probably 100 lbs on Ian (or so it looks)... Of course there were a lot of haters in the crowd, but they don't know about Ian's skills.
Ian went in the cage, grabbed the mic, plugged the school, and proceeded with his game plan.
Within three minutes he had John tapping!!

No one was prepared for it, so we weren't able to capture it on video (Ian tapped him out wearing jeans!!), but someone should be posting a copy of the tape on YouTube supposidly. We'll see if the video surfaces... or if it becomes suppressed. If I find it I will be sure to post it.
Great job Ian!!
